The Moodboard
Styling Notes: While curating this collection I was aware of the "quiet luxury" trend that was gaining popularity. To me this trend is a movement towards fewer, better things and what better accessories than vintage ones that have already stood the test of time? Modern Vintage is characterized by architectural shapes, iconic motifs and weighty statement pieces. The chunky pieces are especially great for pairing with sweaters and knits in the cooler weather!

Being a Los Angeles resident I can't effectively give my take on fall/winter style until a few months into the season. Now that I've experienced a few weeks of "cold" weather I have narrowed down my key pieces for the season. Read on for the fall fashion trends that have guided me this winter:
RED
This one was particularly easy to incorporate over the holidays. Red nails, red sweater, red sweats, etc. Of the many shades that have been popular this season I favor a bright carmine red, I find it so flattering on South Asian skin tones. I am still on the hunt for a beautiful red jumper to wear but I have been able to procure a sporty red sweatshirt that has been a good stand in. I have also decided on red nail polish in my manicure rotation, I love the bright color contrasted on dark winter hued clothing.
SILVER
I was a little worried that we would be trapped in a bad 1980s flashback when I read silver was a new metallic shade. Personally I love it in a ballet flat or bill fold wallet. Lucky for me my vintage Italian knit silver jacket (referred to as my "chainmail jacket" by loved ones) fit the bill perfectly. I hadn't worn it in a few seasons and I'm glad it's having it's moment now. I used to find it hard to style but I've discovered that it goes best with winter white.
BALLET FLATS
This is another trend who's second coming has made most millennials nervous! I am happy to report that I am fully on board with ballet flats. The way it flatteringly elongates the food and adds sophistication to every outfit makes me question why we even abandoned it. They are so comfortable too! My top tips for making ballet flats work for you: look for one with a slightly square toe, this will differentiate it from the round toe ballet flats of 2005. Secondly, make sure your ballet flats have at least a leather upper, you want your feet to breathe- trust me on this one! I have been very happy with this pair of black crocodile ballet flats- would up matching perfectly with my black crocodile purse that I switched to for the season.
OVERCOATS
This one has been tricky to figure out how to wear in California. But after much people watching I think the formula is overcoat + t-shirt+ jeans. I'm not sure I'll get to this trend this winter (I'm still enjoying my wool shacket I bought last year) but I have it bookmarked for next winter.
RIBBONS/BOWS
I am perennially obsessed with velvet bows! It is very exciting that this has emerged as a trend for everything from whimsical hair styles to holiday decor. I have not tried out this trend for myself but it's on my list to test drive just as soon as I master tying a bow.

At the heart of this collection was my stunning moodboard (pictured above), my blueprint for design. I love conceiving of a collection in this tactile way, it leads me to new ideas and really helps me understand how the materials work together. The ripples of light coming off of the blue glass bottles matched the glimmer of the simulated diamonds featured throughout this collection. I paid special attention to the way the dried portions of the rose petals matched the brassy noise of the gold plated metal in each piece. I brought in two objects inspired by my most recent trip to London, my Dishoom cookbook and a William Morris print, which feature contrasting shades dark blue and turquoise. Observing the way these objects worked in the space is showed me how naturally different blues can work together which is echoed in the assortment of lovely enamel rings.

I designed the CHARLIE convertible lariat necklace two years ago and it has been in my jewelry rotation ever since! Crafted using beautiful gold plated link chain and keshi pearls this piece is as versatile as it is luxurious. You get two necklaces in one with this style, use the artful toggle clasps to convert from a classic necklace style to a lariat necklace.

Keep reading to learn more about Fatima and fatima's clay.
Company Name/Artist Name:
My name is Fatima, and my business is called: fatima's clay.
Hometown:
So originally I was born and raised on the East Coast - NY born, and attended high school and college in the Northern VA/DC area. But as of the last few years I have been living in Riverside, California!
How did you learn your art?
Ceramics started for me as a hobby - and still is! I started by taking some GroupOn classes and just really enjoying them. I mentioned to my dad a couple times that I really enjoyed the experience, and he suggested I search if there was a nearby community college that I could take classes at. From there I took a few years of classes and just loved it! When I first started I would spend 4 hours commuting to my day job each day, and even after coming home at 8pm, I would go late to class to make sure I made it for the last part of the lesson. I just LOVED it, and any time I had some extra hours in the day, I would find myself back in the studio. Eventually I finished the classes, bought my own wheel and began working on my own at a local ceramic studio.
Where do you find your inspiration?
I love lines. Sounds strange, but I have always appreciated the simplicity of modern artwork and always notice lines. Even as a teen, I never was too colorful, I always preferred really simple things and neutral colors compared to my friends. I think my interest in simplicity may have been enhanced by an awesome Art History professor I had in college who forced us to look at what we liked about Art in general. When I got into working with ceramics, I had a lot of friends and family mention they didn't like the bulky look of typical ceramic wear. This inspired my mission to make thinner and more delicate pieces that they might like. My goal is to create objects focused around simplicity, and practicality with a sense of delicate-ness that typical ceramic-ware does not always have.
What inspired you to start your business?
The main source of encouragement was my awesome hype man and husband! He is always encouraging me to do things that I like to do, and it just took me forever to find something that I really loved! My friends and family also started asking me over time to make things for them, and they even offered to pay! But I think the final push was from other small business owners (like Noor) which helped me gain the confidence I needed to actually go through with starting the business. So thank you so much Noor!!
What is your process for creating your pieces? What goes into it?
The process of creating a ceramic piece has 5 main steps:
wedging - Before beginning any clay object, the first step is to make sure the clay is ready to be used. Wedging is a process that is similar to kneading in cooking/baking but the intention is to push out any air bubbles that might be in the clay and make the clay easier to handle.
throwing - Once the wedged ball of clay is ready to use, it is placed in the middle of the wheel head and then centered on the spinning wheel head. From there it can be shaped into whatever form that is being made - cup, bowl, plate, etc.
trimming - Once the object is completed on the wheel, it is given some time to dry and then it can be trimmed and shaped into the desired look. If there is a handle that is to be added, it is also added on at this stage.
bisque firing - In this firing, the pieces are fired at around 1800°F and the clay is fully dried out of any water that is remaining in the clay.
glaze firing - Glazing is the process of applying a "color" to the object. This is the final step in the process which will bind the glaze to the object by firing it again at a higher temperature (up to 2300°F+). This will solidify the molecules of the clay and form a glass-like coating. Once the kiln is cooled down, your object is ready for use!
What is your favorite piece to make and why?
Such a difficult question! I think my favorite pieces to make are bowls - there are so many possibilities of what bowls can hold and I just love thinking about the final product as I am creating the piece. I try to envision how it will be practical to the user in the final stage, and what people would prefer or would like to change about typical dishware. In this case, I have the option to fully customize it to work even better for the person who is using it.
What are your hopes/goals for your business?
My goal and hope for the business is to continue to make things that people find are practical, stylish and affordable. As of right now I love trying new things and having fun with it to see what pieces other people are enjoying or prefer. But as I grow I would like to move to a standardized set of objects that people can expect to find on the site at all times, with some rotating new styles here and there!
Just for fun, what is your go-to coffee order?
My favorite coffee drink of all time is a Cardamom Latte. Love the desi touch of cardamom!
Where can people see your work, shop your products?

]]>In the spirit of sharing what is helping me to keep a positive attitude I've rounded up the best NOORNOIR jewelry to wear while staying home! These pieces will have you looking fresh from the neck up-which is all that matters for a Zoom call! I find that simple layering of necklaces and bracelets suit me the best. I'm wearing almost exclusively hoop and huggie earrings as mine are quick to put on and lightweight (I forget that I'm even wearing them!). My gold filled stapes are still serving me well as they don't have to be removed for hand washing and dish washing (both of which I am doing constantly it seems!).

]]>Dear friends & shoppers,
It's taken me a couple of days to gather my thoughts and in that same time a lot has changed, especially in NOORNOIR's hometown of Los Angeles. There has been a local to state to nationwide government response to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. While I worry for our collective health, as a small business owner it's hard not to worry that everything you've been working on building for the last few years might slowly disappear.
I have accepted that trunk shows this year will have to look a little different. As I cancel my birthday plans I have accepted that my annual birthday sale (which is supposed to happen next week) may not be as big as years past. I have accepted that things are going to be different.
I'm so appreciative of your support of my small business during this time, to say thank you I would like to share the following:
I am taking all reasonable measures to minimize the impact to my customers. If you have any immediate questions about your orders, please feel free to email hello@noornoir.com. All jewelry pieces are sanitized before shipping out but I recommend sanitizing shipping boxes/mailers before you open them. According to the CDC, there currently is no evidence to support transmission of COVID-19 associated with shipment of goods and there have been no reported cases of COVID-19 in the United States associated with shipment of goods.
Finally, to raise our collective spirits I want to highlight the good things that may come from this quarantine time (please keep in mind these are simply my impressions):
I am grateful that all that is being asked of me is to stay home and practice social distancing. I am grateful that my home is a safe and welcome place for me (I realize that this may not be the case for everyone). I am grateful that I have the luxury of being able to work from home and thankful for the healthcare professionals, cashiers, restaurant workers, drivers & delivery workers that are going in to work for us!

]]>New Categories
In 2019 I took the plunge and launched TWO new categories: anklets & rings! These were by far the most requested items in 2018. I had never really worn an anklet so I was intimidated to start designing them. But after wearing my ODYSSEY anklet for three months straight I am a total convert! Safe to say you can look forward to many more anklet and ring designs in 2020.
Expanded Gold Filled Selection
Last year I added a few gold filled pieces to NOORNOIR's selection. I love the way this material wears so much that I made the choice to expand NOORNOIR's gold filled offerings to every category (necklaces, bracelets, earrings, rings & anklets too!). There are so many benefits to gold filled material but my favorites are that it is safe for sensitive skin and wears better. You will keep your gold filled pieces for longer and wear them more often! My gold filled VILLA hoops from 2018 are still one of my most worn pair of earrings.
Chain Extensions
Old chain extensions not in use anymore.
New chain extensions that are have become standard!
As I expand my selection of chokers & anklets I find that chain extensions give the wearer more options for length and fit. When I first started adding chain extensions they were were not made from the same materials as the chains themselves and would tarnish over time. I've since sourced better quality chain extensions that are the new standard for NOORNOIR. They are gold plated and non-tarnish, they also have overall superior finishing with the tear drop bead at the end.
More Colors in Best Sellers
Clearly the CLARK hoop earrings and KALI bracelets are best sellers for a reason! I decided to give more options in these fan favorite styles with the addition of color! I could not be happier with the response to all the new colors in these pieces. Check out the CLARK colors here and the KALI colors here.
Expanded Size Range
I aim to make all my designs not dependent on size or adjustable. However I did reach a point where I had to acknowledge that some things just look their best when they fit! Namely the KALI bracelet; initially I used a chain extension to make the bracelet adjustable but I wasn't happy with how much chain was left hanging off. From there I decided to offer a full size range in KALI bracelets so you can choose your perfect fit!
Improved Photography
This may seem like a small thing but I felt it was so crucial for an exceptional online shopping experience. I've always been proud of the NOORNOIR product photos but up until this year I actually used to shoot them all on my iPhone! Not to say that you can't take a great photo on iPhone but I felt it was not optimal for the online shopping experience. Switching to a real camera really improved the quality of my product photos and I am now content that customers can zoom in on all the little details of my jewelry before they click "add to cart"
Here's to continuing to grow and improve in the new year!
xo,
Noor
]]>I'm so proud of the tremendous growth that NOORNOIR has had over the last year! From my first major trade show to being stocked in boutiques nation-wide to having my first retail store, I've done more with NOORNOIR than I ever expected to do this year.
When I first started NOORNOIR I knew that I wanted to build it into what it is today but I didn't know if I could do it! What gave me the confidence to go after this dream? The collective support of my friends, family and most importantly my customers! In the darkest moments when I questioned my own abilities realizing that I was the the only person who didn't believe in me pushed me to get out of my own way!
Every purchase re-affirms that I can make this dream into a reality! So on this Thanksgiving weekend I am so grateful for all of your interest and support in my business! I know that not everyone has such a strong, supportive community and I am lucky to have it!

Travel diary of my trip to Santa Fe, New Mexico from last year, I did so much on this short trip and I don't want to forget my any of the highlights. I am so glad I traveled here in November since fall in LA is basically just an extension of summer. Everything about New Mexico is so colorful (we're talking desert landscape colors) and the "changing of the leaves" was something I had never experienced in the desert before. Santa Fe is such a magical place, the energy of the high desert is tangible and the land has a sacred quality. I really hope to return some day!
Where I Stayed...
We stayed at La Posada Inn, which was located near many of the other hotels and walking distance from the center of town. I appreciated the adobe style architecture and beautiful trees all over the property. A highlight is the dry sauna located in the fitness center, it had the best eucalyptus scent that was very cleansing. The room was quite large and the locally made soap in the bathroom smelled divine.
The best part about staying so close to the older part of town is that it was super walkable. I was able to walk from the hotel to restaurants, shopping and museums. I mostly walked around town and explored all of the little jewelry and hand craft shops. There is a strong arts & crafts culture here and it's worth noting how many locally made and artisan made items you can find in shops. I've highlighted the sites, shops & restaurants I visited below:
Where I Ate...
Chez Mamou Dining Room
Breakfast at Julia
Coffee from Iconik
Afternoon snack at Pig & Fig
What I Saw...
The Cathedral
Meow Wolf
Camel Rock in the distance
Outside the cave dwellings at Bandelier National Monument
Bandelier
View from the tram to Sandia Peak
Where I Shopped...
Basket from Santa Fe, NM
3 little bowls I picked up from different stores
For me, the must-buy items from Santa Fe are home goods! The town is chock full of shops with intricately woven baskets, beautiful pottery, unique artwork. I came away with a few locally made baskets and hand thrown pottery (which I use to organize my beads). I bought a few prints from the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum gift shop but sadly I forgot them at the hotel when I left.
Of course New Mexico is synonymous with jewelry- especially turquoise jewelry! As you can imagine this was of great interest to me. Malouf on the Plaza had a wide selection of gold and silver jewelry with unique gems. Alas I did not purchase any jewelry because I was too overwhelmed by the selection.
I did not set out to shop for clothing when I embarked on this trip but I did discover some amazing boutiques that I listed below:

Walking back from dinner one night, the moon looked so bright next to the Cathedral
Adobe style architecture around town

Before I stared making jewelry for NOORNOIR I was frustrated by the way my costume jewelry would tarnish after a few wears, sometimes even just from sitting in my jewelry box! That's why it was so important to me that NOORNOIR have a selection of gold filled jewelry that is guaranteed to last. Gold filled is a wonderful material that is safer for sensitive skin and wears just like real gold. I love that it can be recycled and that the gold stays brilliant even if you have oily skin (like me). So it won't surprise you to read that the majority of my daily pieces are gold filled.
1. The VILLA coin hoops
From the moment I designed these hoop earrings I haven't stopped reaching for them! These were actually my first pair of hoop earrings and after owning them I understand completely why they are a necessity for so many women. There is just something about hoop earrings that brings out your natural beauty. I've been wearing the same pair for over a year and the gold filled hoops look the same as the first day I wore them (with the help of regular cleanings). The 24K gold plated coin charms have maintained their shiny-ness and add a sophisticated finish to this timeless style. I believe in this style so much I created a "look for less version", click here to shop the ANTALYA hoop earrings.
2. The HARP Pearl Necklace
I love layering my necklaces and the HARP necklace is always in the mix! The HARP necklace is a fresh take on the classic single pearl necklace. I'm always reaching for the necklace because pearl details are everywhere these days! I received an heirloom pearl charm as an anniversary gift and added it onto my HARP necklace and I love the way the vintage pearl and fresh pearl look together (see photo below):
4. The BEVERLY Ball Chain Necklace
I'm all about adding texture and variety into your layers so the BEVERLY ball chain is always in rotation for me. Pictured above with the HARP necklace, this duo never fails me. I find it remarkable that the BEVERLY necklace never tangles itself with other necklaces. Silver ball chains always looked very utilitarian to me but seeing it in gold instantly transforms it into a delicate, lacy necklace. I can always count on the BEVERLY necklace to add a level of glam to any look!
4. The ODYSSEY ANKLET
I'll be honest, I was never an anklet girl! The idea of designing anklets came from customers who kept requesting them. I'm so glad I listened to all of you because I can't imagine not wearing the ODYSSEY anklet everyday! I particularly like the ODYSSEY anklet because the delicate chain does not compete with my shoes. It's so lightweight that I forget I'm even wearing it. Best of all, this anklet is gold filled and safe to wear in water. I've been showering and swimming in my ODYSSEY anklet for 3 months now and it hardly looks worn.
5. The CATALINA Beaded Bracelet
I love stacking my bracelets and the key to a successful stack is getting the proportions right. The CATALINA bracelet is the ideal foundation piece for any arm party as it is smaller than my chunky styles and heavier than my more dainty pieces, as you can see in the above photo with the JOIE bracelet and ZUNNI bracelet. I love the feminine look of the gold ball beads on my wrist. The CATALINA bracelet also echoes the look of the BEVERLY ball chain necklace, I think their difference in scale is why they compliment each other so well. This bracelet is made from gold vermeil (heavy gold plating) beads and in particular the plating is done on top of silver which makes it a great option for daily wear.
Which of your jewelry do you wear everyday? Comment below and let me know!
